Joint initiative sets out path to more sustainable livestock sector
Brussels, 26 June 2017–Healthy animals mean healthy people and a healthy planet. Elanco Animal Health and eight other organisations* working in the farm sector today launched a call for key players help to foster innovation in Europe’s agriculture and rural areas and to enhance their sustainability.
The livestock sector accounts for 42% of total EU agricultural activity, employing almost 30 million people. Rural mobility, generation renewal, and sustainable livestock and animal health are challenges to be addressed to ensure that agricultural production meets our current needs without compromising those of future generations.
The Roadmap for Sustainable EU Livestock aims to give concrete approaches to enhance a more sustainable European agriculture thanks to science-based solutions, innovation and technology. To reach this goal, the roadmap is structured around five areas:
1. Strengthening the competitiveness of the livestock sector
2. Investment in science, technology and innovation
3. Promoting the technologies improving rural mobility for livestock goods
4. Adopting a holistic legislative approach to encourage science-based solutions contributing to sustainable livestock
5. Encouraging exchanges on progress in sustainability between the livestock sector and consumers
This initiative coincides with the debate around the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) reform that will lay the foundation for the future European agriculture. It follows the groups’ trilogy of debates entitled “Sustainable EU Livestock: Actions towards an Innovative, Climate-Smart and Competitive Future” that took place at the European Parliament during 2016.
